Topic: Is there a way to auto fire mdb-completer by clicking a icon and not by typing

Is there a way to auto fire a mdb-completer by clicking a icon and not having to type anything? The reason is I have other optional filter criteria they can use in addition to typing in the mdb-completer. If they click the icon, I want to give them a result based on the other optional filter criteria.
I can do it using jquery ui autocomplete with a method like this:
function trigger_search_autocomplete() {
$("#filter-input").data("ui-autocomplete").term = "";
$("#filter-input").val('');
$("#filter-input").autocomplete( "search", " " );
}
But I want to use only mdb components, so that's not an option for me.
